Photos from my phone

It is not uncommon that we go out somewhere without the camera, only to regret it and then use my phone. We have the general crappiness of taking pix without a flash and with low resolution, but then I totally forget about the photos. So today I've decided to put all the decent ones here for everyone to enjoy.
This is the list of places where the pictures are coming from. The first group are from our first trip to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. It's about an hour away from Oak Park, and we really enjoyed going there while the weather allowed it this past summer. It's not sea water, but nice anyways.
Then we have David enjoying a cambur, followed by a visit to the Brookfield Zoo. After that, we have a pix from a game of the Schaumburg Flyers, a minor league baseball team. They are not particularly good, but it's a fun atmosphere, good brats, cold beer, and the boys really like baseball.
Then we have David and Gabriel behaving like real troopers during our road trip to Mariland this past August. Finally, the last four, are from our visit to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. We went there for the first time last week and we all had a great time. The boys enjoyed the farm exhibition, the energy exhibition, and the hall with all the trains. The museum has a scaled model of the Loop with the L going round and around. Barbara didn't like much the model, since they left out her building (she keeps saying it is a historic Chicago landmark), but I liked it a lot, and the Chicago Board of Trade was right there.

La Mima

Aquí está la última foto que tengo con la Mima (que falleció el jueves 25 de septiembre de 2008, a los cien años de edad). ¡Pueden ver aquí cinco generaciones juntas! El bebé es Gabriel... de dos meses (marzo de 2005) en los brazos de la Mima (tatarabuela), y atrás estamos Camena (abuela), Bárbara (mamá) y Aida (bisabuela). Espero que ahora la Mima ya esté descansando feliz... y cuidándonos a todos desde el cielo.

Mi abuela Aida me cuenta que la Misa de la Mima (el lunes 27 de octubre a las 7pm en la Capilla del Colegio Sophianum, sito en la Avenida Salaverry 2100) estuvo muy concurrida y allí honró el recuerdo de la Mima con unas palabras que anexo a continuación.

La Misa la celebró el Padre Rafael quien fué también el que asistió a la Mima en sus últimas horas. Aida dice que la Mima ha tenido una muerte, si se puede decir, llena de paz, se apagó, como se dice, como una velita que se consumió.

Al terminar la Misa el Padre le pidió a Aida, y además la hizo prometer, que les daría a los hijos y nietos, etc, una copia de lo que dijo, por eso nos envió la copia y aquí la pongo, como le ha pedido el Padre Rafael.

Buenas noches.

Les agradezco su presencia en nombre de toda la familia. Sólo unas palabras, para honrar el recuerdo de la Mima.

¡La Mima ha tenido la alegría de conocer a los nietos de sus nietos! Porque como dice la bendición Bíblica, ¡nuestra familia ha llegado hasta la quinta generación!

Por eso queremos agradecer a Dios esta bendición y el haber podido celebrar sus cien años de vida.

Ha sido Camena, su segunda nieta, quien le puso el nombre de MIMA, cuando siendo muy pequeña, trato de decirle MARINA y le salió MIMA.

Y desde entonces, todos la hemos llamado siempre así: Mima.

Nunca nadie la llamó “abuela” y menos “abuelita” ella no fué nunca la clásica abuela porque se estrenó siendo muy joven.

Su carácter tan alegre, tan divertido y siempre actual, ayudó a que estuviese siempre a la vanguardia en todo.

Con ella, hemos vivido de todo.

Han habido muchas alegrías, momentos divertidos, otros duros, pero sobre todo, han sido sus enseñanzas, sus exigencias y los ejemplos de vida que nos ha dado, lo que nos ha servido para darle verdadero sentido a nuestras vidas.

La MIMA nunca vivió desorientada, ni pasó por depresiones, porque el amor a Dios estaba en el primer lugar de su corazón y ese ha sido el secreto de su fortaleza y el motivo por el que su espíritu fué siempre tan alegre, era muy graciosa, comunicativa y cariñosa con todas las personas que conoció y trató, no discriminó nunca a nadie, mas bien vivió preocupándose siempre de enseñar el amor de Cristo a todos, sin perder oportunidades.

Su devoción al Señor de la Misericordia fué algo muy especial. Nunca le importó interrumpir lo que estuviese haciendo cuando daban las tres de la tarde……a esa hora, en punto….. la Mima y todos los que estábamos con ella teníamos que ir a rezar al Señor de la Misericordia. No importaba si estábamos comiendo o conversando, no podíamos dejar al Señor esperando, ella no lo permitía!

Su entusiasmo por el Señor de la Misericordia hizo que difundiera esa devoción a todas las personas que pudo y por eso hoy les damos en su nombre la estampa con la oración que el Papa Juan Pablo II tanto quiso.

La Mima dedicó muchísimos años a la Acción Católica y fué su secretaria durante más de 20 años.

Cuando Juan Pablo II vino al Perú, ella hospedó en su casa durante tres semanas al Legado Papal con sus secretarios y los atendió con muchísima generosidad y cariño, generosidad que fué premiada con el privilegio de recibir la Comunión de manos del Santo Padre Juan Pablo II y después fué condecorada por encargo del Vaticano, por el Cardenal Landázuri.

Siempre supo entender el sufrimiento ajeno y su preocupación y generosidad por el pobre y por el que sufre ha sido una constante en su vida, nunca midió el esfuerzo o el trabajo necesario para atenderlos.

Su carácter jovial, alegre y cariñoso, espontáneo, ha sido motivo para que las personas que la conocieron sintieran de verdad su cariño.

La MIMA era muy curiosa, tenia afán por saber de todo, de aprender, de situarse en el momento en que vivía, siempre actualizada, en lo que el mundo mostraba como adelanto, o descubrimiento……………ella siempre ponía mucho interés en aprender algo nuevo, le gustaba leer y escribir y ha escrito algunas poesías.

Se hace difícil hablar sobre lo que ha sido la MIMA, es tanto lo que quisiera decir, pero no puedo condensarlo, sólo puedo decir que en todos los papeles que le ha tocado vivir en su vida, ha sido fuente de alegría, de entrega, de abnegación, de esperanza y por qué no decirlo, de EJEMPLO.

Por eso sólo puedo condensar en una frase lo que ella ha sido.

Que, la MIMA HA SIDO UNA PERSONA BUENA, que ha luchado por dar a los demás lo mejor de sí misma y que su recuerdo está vivo en cada uno de nosotros, y que porque vivió con naturalidad lo que Dios le fue pidiendo, ha triunfado, con el máximo de los triunfos---- que es llegar a entrar a la vida eterna para disfrutar de Dios, como siempre quiso.

Fall pictures

Here are a collection of pictures from Labor day to a couple of weeks ago. The first two are from out trip to DC. We did not take many pics, but these two, at the local Masonic Temple (what?)
A couple of weeks later after driving back from DC, we went to the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, about 20 miles west of OP.
Then, there are a few pictures of our day at the Oak Park Oaktober Fest, (uhm... beer, brats, and corn on the cob). Our local paper took a pic of the boys in the fountain and published it, and we (of course) bought like 10 copies of the paper LOL. Finally, we have pictures of our trip to the pumpkin patch with the Mendozas.

Curriculum Night

Yesterday was "Curriculum Night" at the daycare center. They had special activities planned for every classroom, and the parents were invited to participate.

David's classroom activities:

The Toddler Unit focused on the fall classic Five Little Pumpkins for their theme. The toddlers were able to explore hay and pumpkin “guts” as a great science experience. The families were also able to paint little pumpkins to take home (art)!

Gabriel's classroom activities:

The Cheetah Classroom had a variety of stimulating activities centered on the book Caps for Sale. The preschool children estimated how many hats they could stack on their head and then documented the results (science and math). They also practiced tracing and cutting skills while creating a cap of their own (fine motor).

The Core area focused on a fall theme for families. Children were invited to sort leaves into numbered baskets and create leaf rubbings for art. We also provided a variety of fall themed books, a felt book story, and songs to use.

Cell Pics

Some more pix that I got using my cell. Some are from Oak Park and other are from (you guessed right) Brookfield Zoo. I get teased at a lot at work for going there so often, but the boys are ready for bed after a visit to the zoo, so I don't care if the monkeys become close friends by the end of the summer.

David's doctor visit

On Monday David went to his scheduled doctor's visit. He now weights 19lbs 7oz (he gained more than 2 pounds in a couple of months!). Dr. Fox says she cannot find anything wrong with him, meaning everything is fine. He did get blood drawn for a scheduled lead test. He behaved very bravely, he barely cried, although I think he was mad with Mami for not stopping the crazy lady with the needles (he also got two vaccines)!

On another note, Gabriel is re-inventing French... Instead of "siempre" (always) he says "todos los dias" (everyday), it's so funny!

Trip to the Zoo

I know that it seems I have almost abandoned the blog... but that's not true, I have just been very busy this summer.

Various Pics

In the last picture we (Gabo & Mami - Papi is taking the picture) are at yesterday´s White Sox game. With us are the students from my Baseball Statistics class, as well as my co-instructor Steve. This is the second summer we are teaching this class and it´s been great! Nene stayed home, since it was a night game. Gabo fell asleep during the eight inning, and Papi had to carry him all the way home (we took the train!).
