Ms. Mona

Here is Gabriel with his teacher Ms. Mona. I think he will miss her dearly, and she told us today how she will miss him. She says all the kids should be a copy of Gabriel :)

We are a little sad to have to separate the two of them. She is a wonderful teacher, always happy and very affectionate. I hope we will find another teacher like her.

Reading and sleeping

Gabriel is a very good sleeper now (for his first three months of life we thought we would never say this, but here we are). He usually goes to bed around 7:45 pm and wakes up around 6:30 am. Last Thursday we had to wake him after 7:00 am to go to work. Here you can see how he sleeps. He always takes off one of his pajama's sleeves. This was Thursday trying to wake him up. First I opened his door. Nothing happened. Then I opened the curtains. Nothing. Then I opened his drawers and took out his clothes for the day. Nothing. Then I went to get the camera and took this picture (with flash). Still nothing. Finally daddy had to rub his back for him to wake up... Today it was 8:30 am and he hadn't woken up, so we were a little nervous. We went to check on him, but when we opened his door he woke up. I don't know how much longer he could have slept, but it is as if he knew it was Sunday :)

Yesterday, when it was almost time to go to bed, Gabriel took my hand and walked me all the way to the rocker. Then he signaled me to sit him there (he has his ways, but he is still not talking). After that, he signaled me to give him his book (which was on his bedside table). And then he started reading! It was sooo cute that I immediately called Alfredo and had him take these pictures. On the second one he is going after the camera. The book he is reading is called "Buenas noches, Lupe" and it is one of his favorites. His grandpa Ernesto gave it to him. It has different textures on each page. On the picture, he is touching a "bubble" that is soft and mushy. But his favorite page has a little "stuffed bear" that is made out soft fuzzy fabric.

Doctor's office

Today Gabriel had his scheduled doctor's appointment. He is now 31.5 in (60th percentile) high, and weighs 22 lb 7oz (20th percentile). So he is still lean and long.

He also got his four scheduled vaccinations, but now he is running a fever. The doctor also noticed that he again has an ear infection, although he has had no symptoms. So he is on antibiotics again. This time for ten days.

To make things worse, mommy is also sick, with the stomach flu that is going around... :( so poor daddy has to take care of them both.

Learning to self-feed (and other things)

Hello everybody! Gabriel is getting more handsome every day. Of course, this is his mother talking...

He is also developing new skills fast. As you can see in this sequence of pictures, he is learning to self-feed, both at home and at school. I am not sure how much actually makes it into his mouth, but he is certainly trying, and gets pretty upset if you try to help him too much. Of course, now he needs to get a bath almost always after each meal.

His teacher, Ms. Mona, says he is a wonderful soccer player. She was really impressed when Gabriel showed her how he kicks the ball while running, and uses both feet to kick it.

He is also dancing now. Well, what he thinks dancing is. He claps and spins around every time he hears music. And he wants you to clap and spin around with him too.

His speaking skills are not so impressive. He is still not speaking, although whenever the phone rings he takes his fist to his ear and says "hola", and then starts babbling a made-up conversation. It's very funny. He also knows how to ask for food: "mam, mam". And now we are pretty much convinced that he says "ma" and "baba" to refer to mom and dad. He is much better at understanding, though. He pretty much understands what you tell him, and acts accordingly. He is in general very obedient and well behaved (except when he is sick).

Yesterday he took a plastic Easter egg, managed to put a little bag of candy inside it, and could almost close it by himself.

Updated pictures

Here we have several new pictures of Gabriel.

First you can see him in his summer outfit playing on the front yard while mommy and daddy were taking out weeds. He is no longer afraid of the grass, but he certainly still prefers the concrete...

Then you can see him with his daddy and his hat. Cute, huh?

Finally you get to see him do what he enjoys most: eating! Believe it or not that was his afternoon snack for today, and he ate it all, only to have dinner one and a half hours later.

Visit to Austin

Last night we returned from a trip to Austin. We went for the weekend to see Tía Melimé perform. She was great and the play/musical was very funny. Gabriel stayed at home with Tío Can. We all had a lot of fun in Austin, but we didn't take any pictures... :(
The trip was a little crazy. Gabriel was very unhappy in the car on the way there, and that made us very unhappy too. He had a very hard time trying to fall asleep, which is funny considering the car used to be a good place to get him to sleep. Well, not anymore. On the way back we decided it would be a good idea to make a long stop along the way. So we stopped at Katy Mills Mall (just before Houston) and spent 2 and a half hours there. Gabriel was very, very happy. He ran, he rode on a little electric car, he saw a bunny, he got new pajamas and t-shirts, and he ate. After that we returned to the car (he was again very unhappy about this), but after a while he fell asleep (as did mommy), and woke up when we were entering Lafayette. He was very happy to be home. He seemed very excited and ran around the living room moving his arms up and down.
I guess we cannot make such long car rides for such a short trip. Now we are trying to figure out the best strategy for our car trip to Chicago. Any suggestions?

Downtown alive and ice cream

Last Friday after we got Gabo from school, we went for a walk downtown to Lafayette's weekly Spring festival, Downtown Alive. There were a bunch of other kids and live music. We had a great time.

Today we decided to get some ice cream and alas! Gabo can spoon ice cream by himself. That doesn't mean that his aim is any better. I would say that a good 20% of the ice cream landed on me, but it was still really cute.

Barbara is telling me what to write, so ithis may sound like a list, but here it goes.
1 . - We are moving to Chicago. Barbara accepted a position at Roosevelt University as an Assistant Prof. I am still in limbo, not knowing whether I'll continue in a masters program right away or not. We are planning to be there in early August.
2. - El Gabo has now a mouthful of teeth. He is not happy about the teething process, but I have to say that he is not miserable either. He seems more concerned about the roseola that he caught at school. A lot of things happend in that school... he got bitten by another toddler on Thurday. They are still so uncivilized : )
3. - Gabriel can now blow kisses, say bye ("bah"), he can stand all by himself with no help from other people or furniture, open doors, and turn on the TV and change channels to his heart's content (he gets that from me). He also claps when there is music. It is a very exciting time...

My First School Project

On Valentine's day Gabriel came home with this beautiful card for us. He also came home high on sugar from the party at the day care center. He was so hyper you wouldn't believe it!

On another note, Gabriel and Daddy are sick with a cold... :( I was sick too, but now I am better. I hope they get well soon...

First day

Today Gabriel went for the first time to day care. Here we can see him getting ready in the morning, and finally in front of the day care center.

We left him there at 7:15 a.m. and picked him up at 1:45 p.m. His teacher's name is Ms. Mona. Apparently Gabriel had fun all day. He played ouside and had no problem taking a nap. The only time when he cried was to ask for more food... :) I guess he eats more than the other babies (no surprise there).

He didn't cry when we left and he didn't cry when we picked him up, although he was specially clingly to mommy for a couple of hours after that (daddy was kind of jealous).
